THE SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

Stephen Covey wrote a popular book which outlines seven attributes that are critical for success. The seventh habit 'Sharpening the Saw' sustains the other six. This powerful idea can best be described by Covey's word-picture:

Suppose you were to come upon someone in the woods working feverishly to saw down a tree. "What are you doing?" you ask. "Can't you see?" comes the impatient reply. "I'm sawing down this tree." "You look exhausted!" you exclaim. "How long have you been at it?" "More than five hours," he returns, "and I'm beat! This is hard work." "Well why don't you take a break for a few minutes and sharpen that saw?" you inquire. "I'm sure it would go a lot faster." "I don't have time to sharpen the saw," the man says emphatically. "I'm too busy sawing!"

This idea relates to many people. We work very hard and doing little. We think about ourselves and not the task at hand or what commitments we have made to ourselves and others. Often we should take the minute to evaluate our situation in life, work, school or karate. In doing so we may see that if we fix something our task or obligation will be made easier to handle. With advancement at work or in the dojo there is a responsibility that must be accepted before further growth may be achieved. If one does not accept the challenge to grow and improve more is lost than the chance at further promotions - - - we may not continue to grow as individuals.

SO - - take time to sharpen that saw!
